Bird By Bird by Anne Lamott

Lamott’s work is a joy to read.

Without consciously knowing it I turned the last page realizing she had just taught me everything I needed to know in order to become a great writer.

Courageously, she unzips her soul and spills her guts on the table for everyone to see.

The most awkward, uncomfortable, embarrassing bits a person works their whole life trying to hide, she spreads out like an all-you-can-eat buffet. All in the name of encouraging aspiring writers to speak their truth, to be vulnerable and to learn how to create in the face of fear and self doubt.

Her lessons on shitty first drafts, listening to your broccoli and drowning out the noise of radio station KFKD (A.K.A. K-fucked) are forever buried into my mind evoking giggles and determination whenever I dig them back up.

This book has given me the inspiration and confidence to give more of myself to my writing, opening doorways I would have never of passed through before.
